Waiting on Wednesday (33): A STEP TOWARD FALLING

WoW is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine!

Author: Cammie McGovern
Release date: October 6, 2015

Summary: Sometimes one mistake can change everything.

Emily doesn't know why she froze. Or why Lucas did, too. Afterward, she thought of different ways to rationalize it. But the truth is, they could have helped Belinda, and they didn't. It's a mistake they'll both have to live with.

Sometimes doing nothing is the only way to cope.

Belinda doesn't want to talk about what happened. Because when she does, it feels like it's happening all over again.

Sometimes good can come from bad.

Emily and Lucas's punishment is community service at a center for people with disabilities. People like Belinda. Soon they feel like maybe they're starting to make a real difference. Like they would be able to do the right thing if they could do that night all over again. Like they could help not only those at the center but also each other.

But when Belinda returns to school. Emily and Lucas have to figure out if they can do anything that will actually help the one person they hurt most.

Thoughts: This is definitely not my usual type of book, and to be completely honest, I wasn't sure I wanted to read it at first. I heard mixed things about Cammie McGovern's first novel, Say What You Will, and I didn't know if this content would fully interest me. But this book has gotten a nice number of good reviews, and I think it might be really eye-opening as well. So I'm definitely ready to give this book a shot!

Title: Drowning in Inevitable
Author: Shalanda Stanley

Summary: Olivia has spent her whole life struggling to escape her dead mother's shadow. But when her father can't even look at her because Olivia reminds him of her mother, and her grandmother mistakenly calls her "Lillian," shaking a reputation she didn't ask for is next to impossible. Olivia is used to leaning on her best friend, Jamie; her handsome but hot-tempered boyfriend, Max; and their wild-child friend, Maggie, for the reality check that her small Louisiana town can't provide. But when a terrible fight between Jamie and his father turns deadly, all Olivia can think to do is grab her friends and run.

In a flash, Olivia, Jamie, Max, and Maggie become fugitives on the back roads of Louisiana. They're headed to New Orleans, where they hope to find a solution to an unfixable problem. But with their faces displayed on all the news stations, their journey becomes a harrowing game of hide-and-seek from the police--and so-called allies, who just might be the real enemy.

Author: Kate Scelsa

Summary: Mira is starting over at Saint Francis Prep. She promised her parents she would at least try to pretend that she could act like a functioning human this time, not a girl who can't get out bed for days on end, who only feels awake when she's with Sebby.

Jeremy is the painfully shy art nerd at Saint Francis who's been in self-imposed isolation after an incident that ruined his last year of school. When he sees Sebby for the first time across the school lawn, it's as if he's been expecting this blond, lanky boy with mischief glinting in his eye.

Sebby, Mira's gay best friend, is a boy who seems to carry sunlight around with him. Even as life in his foster home starts to take its toll, Sebby and Mira together craft a world of magic rituals and impromptu road trips, designed to fix the broken parts of their lives.

As Jeremy finds himself drawn into Sebby and Mira's world, he begins to understand that they hide in order to protect themselves to keep each other safe from those who don't understand their quest to live for the impossible.

Reviews

I went out of town last weekend to visit my college friends, so I didn't have a ton of weekend time to watch new movies. So as hard as it is to believe, I only watched one movie this week!

Title: Rhinestone
Starring: Dolly Parton, Sylvester Stallone

Thoughts: Oh, this movie was a delight. The premise is that Dolly makes a bet with the manager of the cowboy bar she sings at: she has two weeks to turn an ordinary, average guy into a country singer who can win the favor of the notoriously difficult bar crowd. And Sly is the average guy she gets stuck with.

This movie is hilarious and adorable. And the music is fantastic. I love Dolly, as usual, but I think this movie made me like Sylvester Stallone even more. His singing leaves a little to be desired, but it's perfect for the movie.

My favorite part? The romance of course. This movie has my favorite kind of romance, too. Both characters are super sarcastic and they bicker all the time, even when they're getting along. I absolutely love the interactions between the two of them, and how their relationship develops over the course of those two weeks. I love Dolly movies!

It's obviously a very fluffy, fun movie, so I would suggest you take it at face value. It is what it is, and I loved it.

Rating: A-

I also (finally) posted my review for the movie adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. You can click the link HERE to read that review!

Releases

On Tuesday, July 7th, the following movie came out on DVD and Blu-ray:

Starring: Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron

And two movies are releasing to theaters!
Starring: Ed Skrein, Ray Stevenson

Starring: Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, Emma Thompson

What am I most excited for? Mad Max: Fury Road! Ever since it came out in theaters earlier this year, I've heard nothing but amazing things about it, from both reviewers and friends. So I can't wait to see it! (Though I might need to find the original trilogy to watch first!)

What I'll Be Watching

My mom and I have plans to really work on cleaning/organizing the house this weekend, so I'm not entirely sure if movie plans will be on the docket. Hopefully it will, but you never know!

Appropriately for this blog, this week I'm featuring the first trailer for The 5th Wave was released! The 5th Wave is a film adaptation of the immensely popular YA novel of the same name by Rick Yancey! (And no, I haven't watched the trailer yet, because I have also not yet read the book, and I don't want to be spoiled!)

Film Review: THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER

Adapted from: The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
Starring: Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller
Release date: October 12, 2012

I saw this movie way back when it came out. At that time, I had not read the book, but I absolutely loved the movie. So when I saw the book at Half Price Books last summer, I bought it, but didn't get around to reading it until May this year. So if you want to read my very spoiler-filled review, go HERE. The short version is that I really didn't like the book very much, but I still love the movie.

Yes. I like the movie better than the book. GASP. However, this is an interesting situation because Stephen Chbosky actually wrote and directed the adaptation of his own book. So I don't feel as bad.

First off, let's talk about casting. I think that everyone is cast perfectly. Logan Lerman is the perfect Charlie, able to be adorable and charming, yet extremely awkward and vulnerable at the same time. Ezra is so completely Patrick that I truly couldn't imagine anyone else embodying the role. Emma Watson is actually a pleasant surprise, because having read the book, she is not the first person I would have associated with that character by far. But it is because of Emma that I even really like Sam at all. Film-Sam is ten times more sympathetic and understandable than Book-Sam. It's her performance, more than anything, that actually made me root for a potential relationship between Sam and Charlie.

The relationships between Ezra Miller, Emma Watson and Logan, as well as their relationships with the rest of the cast, feel so realistic and raw. Mae Whitman, Johnny Simmons, and Nina Dobrev are great additions, as well.

If you've read my book review, you'll know that one of my biggest issues with the story is the way it piles on "issue" after "issue." The book features physical abuse, sexual abuse, teen pregnancy, abortions, homophobia, depression, rape, and drug use. And many of these things only happen to side characters, or are mentioned in passing. The reader is hardly given enough time to truly care about one issue before it introduces another. It's too much.

Thankfully, the movie effectively fixes that problem. Many of the subplots from the book are cut out of the film and/or condensed.

Now here's my main reason for preferring the movie over the book: Charlie, our main character and narrator. In both the book and the movie, Charlie is described as "intelligent beyond his years," and one of his teachers even expresses his belief that Charlie could be a great writer, all of which is much more evident in the movie. (Read my book review for more thoughts on why it wasn't believable in the book.)

Also, without going into major spoilers, I will say that Charlie's voice and actions make much more sense to me in the movie. Film-Charlie acts more his age, even while obviously dealing with past trauma. Charlie, as a character, is more fleshed out and developed in the movie, and feels like a real person. Book-Charlie feels more like a front for the big "issues" to be discussed, rather than a three-dimensional character. Film-Charlie is someone to understand and root for, while Book-Charlie is someone to be pitied.

And that is the real difference between the book and the movie, at least in my opinion. Because the book is told entirely from Charlie's letters, the story is told in a very straight-forward manner. And because of Charlie's problems, the way he reacts to things is slightly detached and immature. So when I read the book, I felt detached from the emotions. It didn't really impact me in a big way.

In contrast, the movie hits me where it hurts. I cry every time I watch it. The acting, the cinematography, and the script are all top-notch, and it makes for a really fantastic movie.

Tell me: have YOU seen OR read The Perks of Being a Wallflower yet? What did you think about either the movie, the book, or both? Let me know in the comments below!

Waiting on Wednesday (32): MENAGERIE

WoW is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine!

Title: Menagerie
Author: Rachel Vincent
Series: Menagerie #1
Release date: September 29, 2015

Summary: When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah in her black swan burlesque costume is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.

But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"--mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies--are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.

Thoughts: This sounds awesome. Dark and creepy? Twisted paranormal carnival? Double check. Unique and interesting cast of characters? Triple check. This sounds like everything I never knew I needed. Plus, the author has said that this is neither YA nor romance, so it will expand my reading horizons as well! I haven't read anything by Rachel Vincent yet, but this will definitely be the place I start.

Book Birthdays! -- September 1, 2015

WOW. It's been really long since I've done a Book Birthdays post. But to be honest, there just weren't that many book releases in the last couple of months. There were a few here and there, but not enough to justify Book Birthday posts for each of them.

*Note: when celebrating birthdays for books in a series other than Book 1, I will not list the summary, in the interest of avoiding spoilers. If you've read the first book(s) in the series, or are just insanely curious, follow the book title link to the Goodreads page to read the summary there!
