Book Birthdays! -- October 14, 2014

It's Tuesday, which means it's release day! And we can't catch a break this month on all the awesome new releases!

*Note: when celebrating birthdays for books in a series other than Book 1, I will not list the summary, in the interest of avoiding spoilers. If you've read the first books in the series, or are just insanely curious, follow the book title link to the Goodreads page to read the summary there!

Anthologies

Authors: Holly Black, Ally Carter, Matt de la Pena, Gayle Forman, Jenny Han, David Levithan, Kelly Link, Myra McEntire, Stephanie Perkins, Rainbow Rowell, Laini Taylor, Kiersten White

Summary: Read if you love holiday stories, holiday movies, made-for-TV holiday specials, holiday episodes of your favorite sitcoms and, especially, if you love holiday anthologies by twelve bestselling young adult writers, edited by Stephanie Perkins (who also contributes a story!).

Standalones

Author: Kelsey Macke

Summary: Hot girls get the fairy tales. No one cares about the stepsisters' story. Those girls don't get a sweet little ending; they get a lifetime of longing.

Imogen Keegen has never had a happily ever after--in fact, she doesn't think they are possible. Ever since her mother's death seven years ago, Imogen has pulled herself in and out of therapy, struggled with an "emotionally disturbed" special ed. label, and loathed her perma-plus-sized status.

When Imogen's new stepsister, the evil and gorgeous Ella Cinder, moves in down the hall, Imogen begins losing grip on the pieces she's been trying to hold together. The only things that gave her solace--the theatre, cheese fries, and her best friend, Grant--aren't enough to save her from the pain this time.

While Imogen is enjoying her moment in the spotlight after the high school musical, the journal pages containing her darkest thoughts get put on display. Now, Imogen must resign herself to be crushed under the ever-increasing weight of her pain, or finally accept the starring role in her own life story.

And maybe even find herself a happily ever after.

Author: R.C. Lewis

Summary: Princess Snow is missing.

Her home planet is filled with violence and corruption at the hands of King Matthias and his wife as they attempt to punish her captors. The king will stop at nothing to get his beloved daughter back--but that's assuming she wants to return at all.

Essie has grown used to being cold. Temperature on the planet Thanda are always sub-zero, and she fills her days with coding and repairs for the seven loyal drones that run the local mines.

When a mysterious young man named Dane crash-lands near her home, Essie agrees to help the pilot repair his ship. But soon she realizes that Dane's arrival was far from accidental, and she's pulled into the heart of a war she's risked everything to avoid.

In her enthralling debut, R.C. Lewis weaves the tale of a princess on the run from painful secrets...and a poisonous queen. With the galaxy's future--and her own--in jeopardy, Essie must choose who to trust in a fiery fight for survival.

Series Starters

Author: Sara Raasch
Series: Snow Like Ashes #1

Summary: A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.

Sixteen years ago, the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians' only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter's magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.

Orphaned as an infant during Winter's defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians' general, Sir. Training to be a warrior--and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather--she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket than can restore Winter's magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she's scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she's always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn't go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics--and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

After much deliberation, I've finally decided to pick up the UK edition of My True Love Gave To Me. Both covers are wonderful! But the UK edition has pretty pink page edges, and a ribbon, too! Maybe eventually I'll pick up the US edition as well!

Also, it's been such a good couple of months for fairytale retellings. Two came out this week alone! Which fairytale retellings have been your favorite?

Tell me: what books will YOU be picking up this week? Let me know in the comments below!
